Mentone Girls’ Secondary College is situated in Mentone, a bayside suburb located 17km from the City of Melbourne. The College is well serviced by trains and buses and is a short walk to one of Melbourne’s premier swimming beaches.
Parental expectations of students and the school are very high and the college enjoys an excellent reputation in both the local and broader communities. The College values the development of the whole person and resources a broad ranging co-curricular program.
Our students achieve excellence in a wide range of individual and team sports, in the performing and visual arts, in debating and in public speaking. We have a strong focus on developing the leadership skills of our students and the leadership opportunities offered to our students are extensive.
The College academic performance is outstanding. All students complete the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). Almost all students proceed to tertiary education upon completion of their schooling, including entering the Universities of Melbourne, Monash and Deakin.
Students have a wide range of subject choice from all of the eight key learning areas. The College offers 40 VCE subjects. VCE Mathematics and Science subjects are available at the College. Students have access to Information technology resources in all subjects.
English Language and English Language Centre
The College has a number of trained English as an Additional Language teachers who will support International Students to develop their English Language skills whilst they are studying at the College. Students are offered the opportunity to undertake intensive English tuition at the College, which has a new English Language Centre. This has been designed to meet the needs of our International Students and to support them to achieve strong academic success.
Girls Only Environment
The College is one of only eight girls’ only government schools in Victoria. Research evidence shows that girls in girls’ schools achieve higher academic results than any other group in Australia. In addition, girls receive the full attention of the teacher, take on all the leadership roles and can work through the challenges of adolescence without fear of embarrassment or harassment.
Most of the College buildings have been redeveloped in the past 10 years and the facilities are equal to any government school. Facilities include a study centre for VCE students, a gymnasium, a Music Centre and Art and Technology facilities.
International students are encouraged to participate in the range of activities offered at the College. These include music, sport, athletics, swimming, chorals and drama.
